British Who's Who Autograph Collection To Be Auctioned

An album containing a who's who of autographs from the 20th Century is to go under the hammer in West Sussex.

Captain William Baker, who commanded cross-channel ferries in the 1930s, collected signatures from the likes of Winston Churchill and Rudyard Kipling.

At the time many ships lacked private VIP facilities leading Capt Baker to make his cabin available, and obtain the autographs in the process.

The album is sold by his daughter at a Worthing auction house on 6 February.

The collection, which also contains autographs from Prince Albert and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons, Neville Chamberlain and members of Arsenal FC, is expected to fetch between £400 and £600 at Gorringes auctioneers.

Capt Baker's ship, the SS Biarritz, was destroyed by torpedo during World War II but he survived and retired from the service in 1945.

James Gandolfini Attacks Annoying Autograph Hound

James Gandolfini — the "Sopranos" TV mobster who made a living rubbing out nuisances, including his own kin — whacked a self-proclaimed "No. 1 fan" in the face at JFK Airport on Tuesday.

Sporting a grizzly beard and wary with jet lag, Gandolfini had just stepped off a red-eye flight from L.A. after Sunday night's SAG awards when autograph hound Jason Ertischek, 24, of Brooklyn approached him with a piece of paper and pen in hand.

"Can I be a 'Sopranos' baby?" Ertischek asked the star in a whiny, tough-guy accent.

Gandolfini, with new wife Deborah Lin by his side, ignored Ertischek as paparazzi snapped away. Then the hulking actor suddenly whipped around and smushed the man's face with his hand.

Man Arrested Selling Historic Documents On eBay

A New York state employee who had access to government-owned archives has been arrested on suspicion of stealing hundreds of historic documents, many of which he sold on eBay, authorities said on Monday.

Among the missing documents were an 1823 letter by U.S. Vice President John C. Calhoun and copies of the Davy Crockett Almanacs, pamphlets written by the frontiersman who died at the Alamo in Texas.

Daniel Lorello, 54, of Rensselaer, New York, was charged with grand larceny, possession of stolen property and fraud. He pleaded innocent in Albany City Court on Monday.

He was found out by an alert history buff who saw the items posted on the online auction site and alerted authorities, the state attorney general's office said in a statement.

Lorello, a department of education archivist, pleaded not guilty to the charges although he previously admitted in a written statement to stealing documents and artifacts since 2002. The attorney general's office released a copy of his statement.

In 2007 alone, Lorello stated he took 300 to 400 items, including the four-page Calhoun letter, which drew bids of more than $1,700 while investigators were monitoring the sale.

Officials recovered some 400 items from his upstate New York home, which Lorello estimated was 90 percent of everything he had taken, but they have yet to determine how many items were sold online.

The state library's extensive collection includes an original first draft of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and complete set of autographs from the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

EBay auctions posted by Lorello included a Currier & Ives lithograph that he described as "in excellent condition." The Calhoun letter auction said "100 percent satisfaction is guaranteed."

Other items Lorello admitted in his statement to stealing and selling included an 1835 Davey Crockett Almanac, which fetched $3,200, and a Poor Richard's Almanac which went for $1,001.

EBay was cooperating with state officials in the probe.

PSA/DNA...Who is April Chadwick?

Autograph Alert is reporting another faux pas by third-party authenticators PSA/DNA. For the record, this is one of several disturbing mistakes that have recently been brought to the hobby's attention.

The latest incident was sent to Autograph Alert by one of their readers. It refers to PSA/DNA certificate # E37171 dated Friday, September 29, 2006.

The PSA/DNA “Letter of Authenticity” clearly states that the letter will serve as a certificate of authenticity for...a multi-signed album page, which WE thoroughly examined. It goes on to state “Signed on reverse side by April Chadwick.” It continues, “the signature(s) is/are consistent considering slant, flow, pen pressure, letter size, and other characteristics that are typical of the other exemplars that we have examined in our hobby and professional career."

Who is April Chadwick?

PSA/DNA states it was able to authenticate this signature which they claim is typical of the other examples they have examined.

There is no celebrity by the name of April Chadwick...look for yourself. The statement about studying other exemplars is absolutely false. PSA/DNA could have done nothing else but attempt to read the name as “it appears”. No authentication work or research could possibly have been done.

For the collector who may own this piece, let it be known that the celebrity who signed your album page is actress Cyril Chadwick. Cyril Chadwick was a very popular English comic actress who appeared in 70 films, including some that featured Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.

British Sports Stars May Testify On Fake Memorabilia Sales

Autographed football and rugby shirts bearing the signatures of star players are a big and booming business, but collectors may have paid out thousands of pounds for what are no more than forgeries.

Some of the best-known names in sport, including Jonny Wilkinson, Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard, may be prosecution witnesses next month when Chester Crown Court hears allegations of a major counterfeiting operation in the multimillion-pound sports memorabilia business.

Graeme Walker, owner of Chester-based Sporting Icons, and his former business partner Faisal Madani face 106 specimen charges under the Trades Descriptions Act. Mr Walker also faces trial for theft. Both deny the charges.

Prosecutors will allege that hundreds of items, ranging from football and rugby shirts to framed photographs, books and prints, were sold to the public carrying bogus autographs.

Police and trading standards officers raided the three-floor store in Chester and recovered enough clothing and other items to fill five vans. While they were there, it is claimed, a courier arrived to deliver a huge box of Ferrari racing overalls apparently signed by Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello.

Sporting Icons also trades over the internet and through the eBay auction website. Among the items on offer yesterday was an oil painting of the Manchester United line-up before the 1958 Munich air crash, signed by eight survivors, with a price tag of £10,000.

The company offers a certificate of authenticity that states: “After careful inspection, it is the considered opinion of Sporting Icons Limited that the autograph included in the piece is authentic. The writing habits and individual characteristics are consistent with the known signature specimens of the individual(s) concerned.”

It adds: “In the extremely unlikely event that this is proven not to be the case . . . a lifetime money-back guarantee will come into place. This will be the customer’s sole course of remedy.”

Autograph experts said yesterday that potential buyers of autographed goods could take a few simple steps to protect themselves. “It’s vital to compare the signature with another example,” Geoff Anandappa, an autograph investment adviser at the stamp dealer Stanley Gibbons, said. “If you haven’t seen an example of John Lennon’s autograph, then you won’t know whether the one you have is real.”

He added that auto-pens — machines that automatically replicate a signature — were commonly used. “All of those signatures will be identical. The signature also tends to stop abruptly rather than trailing off.”

Modern graphics could also reprint signed photographs so well that only experts could tell whether the signature was original. The best advice was to buy from a reputable dealer. “I would never buy a valuable item on eBay,” Mr Anandappa said.

Trevor Vennett-Smith, an expert in sporting memorabilia at International Autograph Auctions, predicted great disappointment among people trying to sell collections of autographs built up as investments only to find they are worthless. He said: “Make sure if you’re buying anything that you’ve got a proper address and telephone contact.”

National Archives Seeking Stolen Documents

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is engaged in recovering historical documents and manuscripts that are missing and which , in some instances, are presumed to have been stolen from the National Archives.

America is defined by its history in general and by its founding documents in particular. This article should alert autograph and manuscript dealers and collectors to the fact that certain documents are missing from the National Archives (NARA), and many of us would argue that it is every citizen’s obligation to assist in the recovery of such items if the opportunity presents itself.

The contact persons in the OIG’s office of NARA to whom reports of suspected missing or stolen government documents should be made are:

Kelly Maltagliati (Special Agent) OR
Mitchel Yockelson (Investigative Archivist)
Office of the OIG
Telephone (301) 837-3715 or (301) 837-3153
Fax (301)837-0879
Email: kelly.maltagliati@nara.gov
mitchell.yockelson@nara.gov

The OIG’s office also has a brochure with color illustrations that, at least in part, instruct one on how to identify stolen government documents. That brochure is available upon request.

There is at least a partial list of missing documents listed on the web site of The National Archives at the following link:

Hillary and Bill on the Campaign Trail

Our friend Kevin was successful in Missouri last night: Almost 24 hours later, I'm still excited about last night's success in Florissant, Missouri, with a former President and, perhaps, a future President.

New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton was at McCluer North High School for a town hall meeting titled, "Solutions for America." And, the Senator was accompanied by her husband, former President Bill Clinton. Originally slated to start at 8 p.m., Senator Clinton's victory in the Nevada caucus earlier in the day delayed their arrival as they were busy with interviews and a celebration. Finally, around 10 p.m., the Clintons arrived in the school's gymnasium to a thunderous reception.

Bill led the procession, shaking hands on the way to the center stage. I was stationed in the second row of the bleachers and jumped down to stake out a spot along the barricade. As he approached, I asked for a photo, but instead he grabbed my hand for a handshake. Hillary was a few feet behind, but turned before she got to me to take the stage.

As Hillary completed her presentation, I again jumped from my seat again to take a spot along the barricade. Hillary began "working the ropes" on my side. I was the fifth or sixth person she greeted. She gladly posed for a photo as I leaned over the crowded barricade. My friend, Jay Todd, called today to tell me that the footage of the photo-taking aired on C-SPAN. As she made her way down the line, I looked across the stage and noticed Bill was beginning to greet supporters. He was posing for photos with those that asked and signing mostly campaign posters and copies of his book. Both were accompanied by Secret Service agents keeping an eye on everyone. I waited patiently for Bill to make his way to my side. As he approached, I asked for the photo. He looked at me briefly and began shaking hands of the people behind me and to my side continually leaning in closer and closer to me. I was literally "face to face" with the President. 10 seconds later, stopped and I asked again for the photo. He nodded and I twisted my body over the crowded barricade to snap the photo. I then asked him to sign one of Hillary's campaign posters. He put a beautiful, large signature on the poster. He's known for usually writing small, so this was a nice surprise.

I continued to hold my spot along the barricade as Hillary made her way back around. As she approached, I held out the poster that Bill had signed earlier and she quickly put her signature next to his name. Her signature was not as nice as I've seen, but given the fact that she probably had signed hundreds of autographs, it wasn't that bad. I asked for another photograph, and one of her assistants took my camera to snap the photo.

Way to go Kevin!

Digital Autograph Collecting?

Mobile Fun, a mobile gaming company based in the UK, has announced that it will sell autographs of famous personalities on its web site for users to download to their mobile phones.

Mobile users can buy the autographs of famous and historical people like Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, Mao Zedong and Oscar Wilde online from mobilefun.co.uk, the company says. The web site provides mobile accessories, mobile phones, ringtones, mobile Java games and other entertainment products for sale online.

Simon Aston, product manager, premium autographs system, Mobile Fun, says: "Modern mobile phones have enough memory for avid autograph collectors to carry up to 10,000 copyright-protected autographs in their back pocket."

Mobile Fun says that the company is trying to finalise "a much more complicated system" to enable living celebrities including actors, rock stars and footballers to sell their autographs online. Celebrities can decide on the number of autographs they want to sell online for their admirers to save them in their mobile phones or iPods. By limiting the number of autographs, celebrities can increase their value in monetary terms, the company says.

According to Aston, the sale of autographs will make it easy for celebrities to move around without being stalked by crowds of admirers and autograph collectors in public. "We constantly hear the news from famous celebrities how tired they all are of screaming fans, paparazzi and red carpets," he said. He hopes that the new system will prove to be a commercial success.

Ruslan Fedorovsky, head of Mobile Fun, says: "We already have lots of famous actors, sportsmen and even politicians, ready and waiting to use our autographs system to sell their autographs for tens of thousands of pounds. MobileFun.co.uk is consistently inside the top 1,000 websites and more popular than Jamster or even Vodafone. This new system should take us to even higher levels of internet popularity."

Mobile Fun claims to be one of the fastest growing technology-based companies in the UK and is amongst Sunday Times Microsoft Tech Track 100 companies.

The Long Pen

Reprint from Autograph Alert

by El Fraley, The History Buff

A Canadian science fiction writer Margaret Atwood has developed a device she had dubbed the “the Long Pen” that allows authors to sign books by remote control at a distant location without leaving home. The advantage for the author is that it obviates rigorous book tours. The device consists of a control console with a “pen” with which the author can carry out a pseudo signing AND THE LONG PEN DEVICE imparts electronic (digital) instructions to a remote pen that replicates the author’s signature ( and inscription) on a book placed on a platform in a store where the book was purchased or at a book show. The signature produced by the Long Pen is therefore slightly different than an autopen signature because the actual signing requires participation by the author and video interaction between the fan and the author is possible since the device also has video streaming that allows the author to converse with the book owner as their book is being “signed”. So this format almost replicates a conventional book signing: except, of course, the book buyer never meets the author in person. What is produced by the Long Pen is not a real autograph (Auto-self, graph-write) nor is an autopen signature. Rather, I would call the resulting signature and inscription a ROBOGRAPH since the author is using a ‘robotic device’ to create the signature. Thus, welcome to the ‘new age’ of the virtual robographs.

Harry Truman once said, “The only thing that is new is the history you do not know.” The concept of the Long Pen was put forth by Gernsback over a hundred years ago:

“She hesitated, and then, impulsively, "I wonder if it would be too much to ask you for your autograph?" Ralph then attached the Telautograph to his Telephot while the girl did the same. When both instruments were connected he signed his name and he saw his signature appear simultaneously on the machine in Switzerland.”
From Ralph 124c 41 +, by Hugo Gernsback.

The Long Pen is not unlike the robotic ‘daVinci Device, produced by the Intuitive Surgical Company that is used by modern surgeons to perform surgery sitting at a console either in the same room as the patient or at a remote location. The devices, daVinci and Long Pen, are in principle almost one in the same.

The implication of the Long Pen for the field of autographs in general and collectors of signed books in particular is obvious. Clearly, signed book collectors in the near future will have to be able to distinguish between authentically signed books , outright forgeries and the new kid on the block—virtual robographs.

The next step in the evolution of this technology might be to create a robotic signer with a memory cache of signatures of infinite variation that were originally created by a major political figure or other celebrity. Such proxy signatures that might have a thousand or so different iterations may well turn out to be much more difficult to detect than autopen signatures. Time will tell.

There are three things certain in life, death taxes and change. Autographists must be committed to study and scholarship in order to stay current and to avoid the costly mistakes of the unwary or uninformed collector.

More detailed information on The Long Pen is available on this web site:

Jerry Seinfeld in Peoria, Illinois

Our friend Kevin was successful again: "I've been trying for years and was FINALLY successful late last night in getting a photo with Jerry Seinfeld. He stopped as he was walking off the stage and into the backstage garage area following the second of two sold-out shows at the Peoria (Illinois) Civic Center Theater. While security attempted to keep me away, Jerry came over to me for the photo as I asked, even putting back on his suit jacket for the picture. He mentioned that he saw me waiting when he arrived. After a quick wave goodbye, he was off to the Greater Peoria Regional Airport for his 11:37 p.m. flight back home to the East Hampton (New York) Airport."

When The Candidates Come Calling

Our friend Dale, who lives in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, was busy meeting the Democratic candidates for several months before the Iowa Caucus. He has forwarded his experiences for our readers.

I met Senator Joe Biden 3 times during the campaign. This picture was taken our first meeting on November 26,2007 at a small restaurant where he had a "town hall" meeting. I showed up early enough to have breakfast and get a table in front of where he spoke. After he was done with the speech he was more then happy to meet people individually, answer questions, shake hands and pose for photos and sign autographs. This time he signed 2 campaign posters and one of his flyers for me as well as posing for the picture with me. The second time we met, I arrived an hour early again and actually helped set up. At the end of the event he signed 2 color 8x10 photos, both I had taken at our first meeting. I had my some with me the third time I met Senator Biden. He was able to get a campaign poster and picture signed and inscribed to him. It was strictly all business for me at that event since I helped set up, greet and sign people in and help tear down.

I met Senator Clinton on November 24, 2007 when she stopped at our local junior college. Again, I arrived an hour early, and got front and center seats to hear her speak. She was very good about meeting, posing for pictures and signing autographs after her speech. When she came to me, she posed for a picture that was taken by a friend of mine. This picture was taken of her signing some items for me. She didn't bat an eyelash as she signed her campaign poster, and 2 color photos. She inscribed one to me and the other to my mother, who wasn't able to attend the event. I also met former President Bill Clinton at a separate stop, but wasn't able to get a picture with him. I did get 3 color photos and a GQ magazine with his photo on the cover signed.

I met the former Secretary of State on January 3, 2008, the afternoon of the Iowa Caucuses. I had read in the online Des Moines Register she would be in town at a local restaurant or "tea room". I went to our local book store and bought her book "Madame Secretary" and showed up at the restaurant about 30 minutes early. On my arrival, I was shocked that no media or entourage was present. I was greeted by the owner, who had no idea she was going to be there. After double checking the website and making call to Hillary Clinton's campaign headquarters, it was confirmed that she was defintely going to arrive shortly. The owner called our local paper and they had no idea she was going to be in town either. I sat down at a table just inside the door, got lunch and awaited her arrival. Ms. Albright arrived shortly after and, following a short chit-chat with the owner both came to my table and the owner introduced us. She explained to Ms. Albright that I was the person who had told them that she would be there.

Ms. Albright shook my hand and "asked me" if she could sign the book I had brought, which was setting on the table. She asked for my name so she could inscribe the book to me. We actually talked a bit while she was signing and she asked if I would caucus tonight and for who. When I told her Joe Biden she said, "he is a great man and senator, you can't go wrong with him, but consider Hillary for your second choice (I did). After she went around and met the other patrons (30 approx.) I asked her for a picture and she was happy to oblige. On her way out after having lunch, we met again, talked a bit, again reminding me to keep Hillary in mind for my second choice. I thanked her for stopping by the restaurant and Fort Dodge and it was an honor to meet her.

Side note to the story...the reporter (female) showed up to do the interview. It turns out it was her first story ever and she was so nervous that her legs were shaking. She said she had admired Ms. Albright for so long and never dreamed of meeting or interviewing her. I also had a long chat with the photographer and he thought my hobby was very interesting and would make a good feature article in our local paper.

I met Senator Dodd at our local fire station on October 23, 2007. I got there about an hour early and obtained a front row seat. The seat next to me remained vacant until Senator Dodd arrived. He sat down next to me,(waiting to be introduced) looked at me and shook my hand, as I welcomed him to Ft Dodge. After his speech, and Q&A period he was gracious enough to meet everyone there, shake hands and sign autographs. That is when I had this picture taken with him. One similar to this picture appeared on the front page of the Ft. Dodge Messenger in full color. I was able to obtain 2 color 8x10 photos and a signed political campaign poster.

I brought my son Dylan (12) along to meet Bill Richardson on December 30, 2007, his last campaign stop here in Fort Dodge. We arrived about an hour early again and we took front row seats. I was able to get a lot of great pictures of Governor Richardson. After his speech and Q&A session he was very gracious and willing to meet, shake hands and sign autographs. This is when I got the opportunuity to take the picture of him with my son. Between the two of us we got 4 color 8x10 photos and a campaign poster signed.

I met former Senator Edwards twice while he was campaigning in Iowa. This picture was taken back in July when he stopped at our local library to give a speech. It was my first event of the season, and I showed up about 20 minutes early and ended up in the back. After his speech, I worked my way to the front in order to meet Mr. Edwards. He signed 2 campaign posters for me while posing for the picture. The second time I met him, on January 1, 2008, I arrived over an hour early and got a front row seat, 2 seats away from his wife Elizabeth and Iowa's First Lady Mari Culver. I didn't get any pictures taken with any of them, but I did get 3 color 8x10 photos signed by him, 1 inscribed to my son and 1 color 8x10 photo of him and his wife that both signed.

Smythe Historic Autograph Auction - January 17th

On Thursday, January 17, auctioneers RM Smythe & Co, Inc, will hold its live Winter Autograph Auction, presenting collectors and dealers with one of the most interesting selections of historic autographs in recent memory. The sale, which begins at 11 am, features the collection of Steven Lee Carson, the fruits of fifty years of collection, with particular strength in presidential and related autographs. Following the public auction, Smythe will hold a mail bid and internet-only auction of Americana, autographs, books, photographs, philatelic items and more, beginning at 2 pm.

One of the most unusual items in the auction is an autograph book from the Carson collection containing the rare signature of James A. Garfield as President. It also contains remarkable combinations of autographs together on the same page, such as Presidents Hayes, Ford, and Carter; another page gathers together Supreme Court Justices Burger, Rehnquist, Blackmun, Brennan, Breyer, Ginsburg, Kennedy, O’Connor, Powell, Scalia, Souter, Stevens, Thomas, and White; while another sports authors and playwrights Edward Albee, EL Doctorow, Norman Mailer, Neil Simon, Salman Rushdie, Gore Vidal, and others. Another unusual combination being offered is a photograph of Richard Nixon being sworn in by Chief Justice Warren Burger that is signed by Nixon and Burger, but also by Henry Kissinger and President Jimmy Carter. Yet another is signed by both Franklin D. Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, a naval appointment during the latter’s administration, with FDR signing as Acting Secretary of the Navy. Also from the Carson collection come rarities like a statement from New York Mayor Opdyke in response to the Draft Riots in 1863, and a choice content typed letter signed by Martin Luther King, Jr., explaining that “the temper of events” in the South prevents him from accepting speaking engagements too far in advance. Among Carson’s lasting interests is the life of Abraham Lincoln. Accordingly, his collection features an autograph letter signed in which the President asks Secretary of War Edwin Stanton to approve an army officer’s request to resign. A moving autograph letter signed by his widow, Mary Lincoln, is written two weeks after the death of her son, Tad, and pleads with a friend to “come, come to me” to comfort her in her “fearful sorrow.”

Modern presidents and first ladies are also present, including a choice group of ten autograph letters signed by Nancy Reagan, one of them concerning her husband’s ongoing recovery from the 1981 attempt on his life! In a stunning pair of letters, each offered separately, Theodore Roosevelt writes about his struggle to negotiate the end of the Russo-Japanese War (for which he would win the Nobel Peace Prize), complaining that the English have been “foolishly reluctant to advise Japan to be reasonable;” and admits months after leaving office that he is disappointed in President Taft, his chosen successor, adding that he has not promised never to try again for the White House! A great item from the World War I era is a page signed by principals in the negotiation of the Treaty of Versailles: Woodrow Wilson, David Lloyd George, Ferdinand Foch, and Ignace J. Paderewski, among others. In another unusual combination, the men who began and ended World War II in the Pacific, Japanese pilot Mitsuo Fuchida, who led the bombing attack on Pearl Harbor and US pilot Paul W. Tibbets, who dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, sign a First Day Cover commemorating the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

Other treasures abound in the Steven Lee Carson collection, but one more deserves special notice. Smythe will offer an autograph letter signed by physicist Albert Einstein in which he colludes with a dean at New York University to elude US State Department regulations and help a colleague escape from Nazi Germany!

Following the Carson collection, Smythe will continue with a characteristic selection of important and valuable autographs. In a scarce document signed as President, John Adams approves a letter of marque for a private armed US ship during the “Quasi-War” with France! A highly interesting autograph letter signed by his First Lady, Abigail Adams, sends condolences to a friend who has lost a son in service of his country in 1812. Other founders in the auction include Thomas Jefferson, in the form of an autograph letter signed as President, a letter of introduction for the son of the Secretary of the Navy; James Madison, in documents signed (one with James Monroe); and Signers Robert Morris and Thomas McKean. Two other lots from the founding era, though more modest, are of great interest: a letter from Deputy Quartermaster John Keese from 1781 about an escort for “His Excellency General Washington’s Lady [and] Colo. Hamilton’s Lady,” and a series of three fine content letters from exiled royalist Peter Van Schaack to John Jay while the latter was completing negotiations for the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

However, the sale isn’t all founders and presidents! There are world leaders, such as Winston Churchill (in a signed photograph) and Adolf Hitler (signed program); beloved names from entertainment like John Lennon (a signature with a self-portrait sketch), Laurel and Hardy (a photograph signed by both), and Boris Karloff (an autograph note signed); authors including Agatha Christie, Beatrix Potter, and HG Wells (each in autograph letters signed); scientists and inventors Thomas A. Edison (in several forms, including a letter predicting that radio will kill the record business!), Alexander Fleming, and Richard J. Gatling (asking Colt to build him a model gun); composers such as Giacomo Puccini (autograph letter signed); and popular artists like cartoonist Charles Schulz (a pencil drawing of Snoopy) and Norman Rockwell (an incredible concept sketch for one of his Post covers)! This is just a fraction of what will be offered, and anyone interested in the finest autographs should view the catalog at www.smytheonline.com, or call 800-622-1880 to order a hard copy (available for $25).

As noted, after the public autograph auction, Smythe will begin the mail bid and Internet-only portion of its sale, with hundreds of lots of Americana, rare and collectible books, photographs, autographs, and ephemera. Among the standouts from that section are rare tapestries commemorating the Declaration of Independence, a scarce copy of President Madison’s message to Congress with dispatches from the negotiation of the Treaty of Ghent, soldiers’ Civil War letters, and unique photographs by a GI of Marilyn Monroe’s visit to US troops in Korea in 1953!

The public portion of this auction will be held at RM Smythe’s headquarters at 2 Rector Street in the heart of the Financial District in New York City. Both the public and the mail and internet portions of the auction will run simultaneously on eBay Live Auctions. For information on lot viewing and on bidding in person, by phone, by mail, or online, call 212-913-1880 or 800-622-1880, or visit Smythe’s web site at www.smytheonline.com

Ironic Autographed Piece For Sale

One time, at an antique book show, I saw an armed security officer standing guard over a personalized, autographed first edition of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf”. If that was not enough to make my blood run cold and the creepy crawlies run up and down my body, today I saw another autographed piece of “history” that instead of causing feelings of horror and disgust to pulse through me - brought the bile to my throat instead.I am taking about a Grand Theft Auto III video game for the PS2 signed by none other than Wacky Jacky himself. Yes, it is authentic. Apparently, the seller Nick acquired Jack Thompson’s autograph during JT’s November debate appearance at VGXPO. The current price for an autograph from such a piece of *EXPLETIVE DELETED* on a game that he loathes and decries so much is $4,000. According to the seller, the reasons why you would want to purchase such a ironic item are:

1. Because it’s a physical piece of hilarious gaming irony.
2. A fantastic conversation piece. (seriously)
3. Because Mr. Thompson was nice enough to sign this for me, all proceeds will go to Child’s Play Charity.
4. Where else can you find an item like this?
5. You can brag to all your friends about how cool you are.
6. Because you REALLY want to play Grand Theft Auto III.

I suppose if someone is crazy enough to buy this - and I have seen people buy weirder, more macabre things - the good news is that the seller promises to donate the proceeds to charity. Whether someone actually buys this item or not, kudos to Nick for having enough wit and zest for life to convince JT to sign something he has been bashing from day one. Although, personally, I think JT would sign anything just to have his name on something.

You can check out the item yourself on eBay
