Did Adolf Hitler Draw Disney Characters?

The director of a Norwegian museum claimed yesterday to have discovered cartoons drawn by Adolf Hitler during the Second World War.

William Hakvaag, the director of a war museum in northern Norway, said he found the drawings hidden in a painting signed "A. Hitler" that he bought at an auction in Germany.

He found coloured cartoons of the characters Bashful and Doc from the 1937 Disney film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which were signed A.H., and an unsigned sketch of Pinocchio as he appeared in the 1940 Disney film.

Hitler tried to make a living as an artist before his rise to power. While there was no independent confirmation yesterday that the drawings were the work of the Nazi leader, Hitler is known to have owned a copy of Snow White, the classic animated adaptation of a German fairy tale, and to have viewed it in his private cinema.

Mr Hakvaag, who said he had performed tests on the paintings which suggested that they dated from 1940, said: "I am 100 per cent sure that these are drawings by Hitler. If one wanted to make a forgery, one would never hide it in the back of a picture, where it might never be discovered."

The initials on the sketches, and the signature on the painting, matched other copies of Hitler's handwriting, he claimed.

"Hitler had a copy of Snow White," he said. "He thought this was one of the best movies ever made."

Discoveries of Nazi-era memorabilia have repeatedly turned out to be mistaken or the result of a hoax. However, art attributed to Hitler continues to sell at auction, even if its provenance is far from complete.

Nineteen watercolours and two sketches said to be by Hitler were sold in Britain two years ago for a total of £118,000.

The auction firm Jefferys said the seller did everything possible to authenticate the works.

The pictures of cottages and rural scenes were found in a farmhouse in Belgium and were believed to have been painted while Hitler was a young soldier in the country during the First World War.

Autograph Authentication Experts - A Joke is a Joke, is a Joke, is a Joke

Reprinted commentary from AutographAlert.com:

There seems to be no end to the 3rd party autograph authentication errors. Many think the errors are way beyond epidemic proportions.

Remember “The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight?” The “gang of autograph authenticators” at PSA/DNA are making them look like sharpshooters.

Once again we go to the PSA/DNA website. What fabulous self promotion! “Have your autographs examined and certified by the world’s foremost autograph experts.” “The world’s leading third party autograph authentication company using state of the art technology.” Foremost autograph experts? Has anyone read the autograph credentials of their lead authenticator?

You have to love “state of the art technology!” Whatever that piece of machinery is, they need to return it for a refund.

Proof of the pudding. PSA/DNA was created in 1998. They have been in business ten years. Let’s repeat their claim...“the world’s leading third party autograph authentication company”....”world’s foremost autograph experts”...“state of the art technology.” WOW! Impressive self promotion.

Can anyone tell us why after 10 years in business the geniuses at PSA/DNA still can’t tell a printed signature from one signed with real ink? To those in the know, and that group is increasing rapidly, it comes as no surprise that they still unable to do so.

The recent PSA/DNA embarrassment refers to one of the most common printed signatures in the sports collecting hobby. Common, because the signature has been around since 1990 and the book and sports industry is deluged with copies. Anyone who has been to a library, thrift store, book store, sports collectible shop, or sports collectors show should have seen a copy of the book Bo Knows Bo by Bo Jackson. The first edition has been printed in hundreds of thousands of copies and each copy has the identical printed signature of Bo Jackson on the half title page. For those novices reading this article, a printed signature is one that is a copy of a genuine signature printed on the page by the publisher. It is NOT a genuine ink signature hand signed by the celebrity.

For the average collector it is generally easy to spot a fake, printed signature verses someone who took a pen and signed their name in ink.

Ebay item #140204459126 lists one of these extremely common books which has the printed (non genuine) signature of Bo Jackson on the half title page. Every copy of the book has the identical printed signature. This copy was submitted to PSA/DNA who would like you to believe they are the world’s leading third party autograph authentication company, who has the foremost autograph experts, who use state of the art technology, and they deemed this fake signature as GENUINE! PSA/DNA Certificate F51344. Go to the PSA/DNA website and verify the Certificate number. Experiencing this are you in disbelief, denial or does it simply confirm what you already knew about 3rd party autograph authenticating companies outrageous guesses/opinions?

“Printed” signature of Bo Jackson that PSA/DNA
has wrongly authenticated as genuine

Now, what does one do when they require an autograph authenticated? How could you possibly think of using PSA/DNA? Who is PSA/DNA’s competitor? The answer is , Global Authentication, Inc. (GAI). Now lets go back to eBay and look at item number 260127895153. It’s a different copy of the same book Bo Knows Bo. You have already learned that this copy will also have the identical printed signature of Bo Jackson on the half title page. This additional copy is being offered by Northridge Sports Collectibles in Northridge, California with a Buy It Now price of $169.99. This copy comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Global Authentication Inc. (GAI).

Gertrude Stein wrote “A rose is a rose, is a rose, is a rose...”
Hemingway wrote “A bitch is a bitch, is a bitch...”
Autographalert.com says “a joke is a joke is a joke, is a joke...but this joke isn’t funny using third party authenticators.”

The use of many 3rd party authenticators has become the premier method of having fake autographs passed as good and some unethical dealers and auctions houses are knowingly taking advantage of this conundrum.

Collectors must also take into consideration the handful of people, usually dealers who support these authenticating groups. These dealers are well aware of the severe damage that has already been done to this hobby and their continued support of the market being flooded with “authenticating guesses” can no longer be acceptable.

It certainly appears if an autograph item comes with a COA from a third party authenticating company, it may be best to have the item examined by a professional autograph dealer who specializes in the field of the autograph you need authenticated.

Kevin Scores Paris Hilton!

Last night in St. Louis it was three-for-three highlighted by an exciting encounter with socialite Paris Hilton as she arrived at Lambert St. Louis International Airport from Los Angeles. She was originally scheduled to arrive at 5:20 p.m., but inclement weather in St. Louis delayed her flight until 6:50 p.m. Paris and her bodyguard were some of the first people off the plane. Dressed in all black with a hood and sunglasses, she was barely recognizable as she came off the plane. Although talking on her cell phone, she took time to sign autographs and pose for photographs for myself and about ten other collectors as she walked to the baggage claim area. It was quite the scene as we followed her. It had lots of other passengers wondering what was happening and the identity of the celebrity. As Paris came to the baggage claim area, her bodyguard led her outside to the parking garage and her SUV. By the time she approached the car, she had ended her telephone conversion and continued to sign autographs and take photographs. She even signed an old Time magazine, featuring her grandfather, Conrad Hilton, on the cover, for my friend, Jay. Paris was more than generous with the autographs, signing three for me and as many as six for another collector.

Here's another shot with Paris as we were walking through the airport. The hand on her shoulder was the bodyguard. He kept a hand on her the entire time walking through the airport before relaxing in the parking garage. The shot above was taken by the car. By the way, Paris was in St. Louis to promote her new fragrance, Can Can, at the South County Mall today. $150 would have gotten you the opportunity to meet her and get a signed photo.

Next, we hit the interstate for Laclede's Landing and the Laugh Factory. Actor, comedian, and former Saturday Night Live star Tracy Morgan was appearing there this weekend. We only had to wait about 15 minutes before he rolled up in a Lincoln town car. As he opened the door, we couldn't help but smell the aroma of a wonderful herbal cigarette that he'd been enjoying on the ride to the comedy club. Tracy was very nice and stopped to sign a photograph and take this picture. We also pointed out to him that the name of the street on which the club was located is Morgan Street and the pub across the street was the Morgan Street Brewery (see the sign in the background). He thought that was "cool."

Earlier in the afternoon, we stopped by the Holiday Inn in Alton to get and autograph and photo with comedian Emo Phillips as he departed for his show at the Argosy Alton Casino. Emo was the executive producer of the movie 'Meet the Parents' and also starred in the Weird Al/Michael Richards movie 'UHF'. What a silly guy! The inscription on my autograph: "To Kevin: My 18th favorite mammal of all time. Love...Emo." Thanks again, Kevin!

How I Made $1,000 on Autographs I Collected By Mail

By Nick H.

At one time, I collected autographs by mail. It was fun, and it became something of a game, as well. Using basic knowledge and strategies, I acquired some nice items from celebrities which sold for about $1,000 when I finally turned my attention in other directions.

Although you can purchase autographs, I got my collection with minor expenditures for postage and packaging and books (usually remainders). So, although it wouldn't be accurate to say I got my collection free, it would be accurate to say that I didn't spend much for what others ultimately paid me $1,000 cash for.

Steps to Get Started

So, what did I do?

First, I scoured the place for books on the subject of autograph collecting. There weren't many. George Sullivan had a kid's book on autograph collecting I got from a discount book dealer and that was my main guide for a long time. I also checked hobby magazines and searched Reader's Guide to Periodicals for articles on the hobby. These days, of course, there's tons of material on the internet.

Second, I started acquiring addresses. Some came from Who's Who, some were the result of using common sense by writing to politicians in care of their office address, and others came along in other ways. Firms that the celebrity endorses are a good place to write for their autograph. My membership in the Universal Autograph Collector's Club got me more addresses in their monthly magazine. Occasionally, I purchased lists from dealers in celebrity addresses.

Third, i looked for material to be signed. Photographs are good, widely available it's the least desireable of autographs. Photographs are good, widely available, widely desired. Keep in mind, many celebrities you'll seek signatures from...writers, war heroes...do not have a budget for photos, but searching should bring up photos in magazines or books that you can clip. You can also acquire books and send them to the author, putting together a nice collection. You can buy some in very nice condition from Amazon and eBay. Just check the description closely. At a dollar store, I got two copies of Ronald Reagan's memoirs. I sent one to him with return postage and envelope, he signed it, and eventually I sold it for $80. I bought Richard Nixon's book, "In the Arena" for $1.98 from Hamilton Books, a mailorder dealer in remainders, sent it to Nixon for his signature, and it sold for $120.

A few quick rules.

Be polite. You are asking the celebrity for something that they know is worth money, even if you have no intention of selling the item. If you are rude to them, how inclined do you think they'll be to sign?

Write neatly if writing by hand. Some collectors by mail prefer handwriting letters for the personal touch.

Further personalize your request. Make a connection with the person by complimenting them on a movie they made, especially if there's a certain scene or something you liked, or their song, or their book. It may not have made any difference when I wrote to President Nixon asking him to sign my copy of "In the Arena," but I did mention that when he was at Di An, Vietnam, the day one of the photos included his book was taken of him surrounded by Army cavalrymen, I was one of the GI's stationed there. It couldn't hurt.

Include adequate postage to get your item there, include a self-addressed envelope with postage adequate to get it back. You might let this slide with a Hollywood or Nashville celebrity, but not anyone else who, again, doesn't have a postage allowance to cover this sort of expense. Even with a Hollywood-type celebrity, if I am sending something to sign, I'd include envelope and postage to further assure it's return.

If you are collecting with a mind towards building a valuable collection, perhaps as an inheritance down the road, I would consider how much I want to concentrate on Hollywood celebrities. After all, there are services that provide "signed" photos to fans which the celebrity never sees. It fulfill them even though it isn't what you want....an authenticallty signed item. Aside from that, Hollywood celebrities often have secretaries who sign photos for them and even autopen devices which reproduce the celebrity's signature. Personally, I steered clear of the whole thing unless it was to seek a signature of a retired or semi-retired star with a photo or some item I usually provided for a signature. Jimmy Cagney signed a photo (there'll be hundreds of minor also-rans, but never another Jimmy Cagney, and that affects value as I've written elsewhere.). I also contacted the surviving Three Stooges and got autographs.

Don't ignore the usual...presidents, astronauts, actors, recording artists, sports celebrities... but consider other collecting specialties. I assembled a nice collection of autographs from space scientists who put up the manned and unmanned space missions. They are not often asked for autographs, but they are the ones doing the job. And they're reachable through NASA. All you need is the mailing address of the various space centers. Other specialties abound. Military leaders, Pulitzer Prize winners, independent filmmakers, etc.

Be sure you store your autograph collection properly. Condition of the autograph has great impact on its value.

Follow these tips, start reading what other people have to say about autograph collecting, and get started. It's fun and you can acquire something of value...at little or no cost.

The World’s Biggest. Best. Autograph Signing. Ever.

Super Bowl V. Super Bowl XXXV.
And the Greatest Game Ever Played.
All under one roof.

3/28-30, 2008

AMG, Alumni Management Group, is proud to announce the kick-off of the world’s largest autograph signing event, FIVE THIRTY-FIVE, to be held March 28th, 29th and 30th on the campus of Towson University!
Consisting of players from the 1958 championship Baltimore Colts, the Super Bowl V championship 1970 Baltimore Colts and the 2000 Super Bowl XXXV championship Baltimore Ravens, FIVE THIRTY-FIVE is an unprecedented gathering of three generations of Baltimore football talent – together for the first time under one roof – signing autographs for two days.
Confirmed players are Ray Lewis, Mike Flynn, Tom Mattie, Art Donovan and many, many, many more!
The event will be three days of autograph collecting, memorabilia sales, games, events, contests, food, fun and more, for the entire family.

The event is two-fold:
-On Friday, March 28th, fans and collectors will be able to purchase exclusive VIP tickets to an evening dinner with the players from all of the teams.
-On Saturday & Sunday, March 29th and 30th, fans can buy tickets to the main event itself, FIVE THIRTY-FIVE, and be able to put together their own custom “dream package” of autographs, consisting of the players they would like to have autograph merchandise, photos and memorabilia.
“This is, all hyperbole aside, a once-in-a-lifetime event”, said Spencer Folau, Vice-President of AMG and former Baltimore Raven. “Many of these players will never again be under the same roof, at the same time. This is a reunion of Baltimore football talent that will never be seen again or equaled again.”
The event will be held, fittingly enough, in and around Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium, named after the Baltimore football legend himself.
“For so many reasons, Johnny U. Stadium was our first and best choice for the event,” said Seth A. Katz, president of AMG. “Location, space, parking, size of the venue, those were all great … but as an homage to the man who is arguably the greatest football legend in Maryland, it had to be Johnny U. Stadium. And it is, and we couldn’t be happier.”
Tickets for FIVE THIRTY-FIVE go on sale Monday, December 17th, through both TicketMaster.com (and their hotline @ 410-547-SEAT) and also through AMG’s website

Sports Fans Duped by Fakes

Sports fans were conned into spending thousands of pounds on faked autographs of their heroes, a court heard today.

Signatures of England rugby player Jonny Wilkinson, and footballers David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, and Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, were “systematically” forged and sold by businessmen Graeme Walker and Faisal Madani, a jury at Chester Crown Court was told.

Other counterfeit goods, it was heard, included replicas of England international Caps and Worthington and European Cup final shirts which were sold as genuine.

Walker, 45, is accused of more than 50 counts of cheating the customers of his shop, Sporting Icons Limited, which has a store in Chester city centre and also operates on the internet site eBay.

Madani, 43, described in court as the ’middle man’, faces 20 counts of supplying the forgeries.

Andrew Thomas QC, prosecuting, opened the trial saying: “Not every item in the shop was a forgery. The bogus stock was mixed in with genuine stock. We say that was all part of the fraud - by hiding the fakes among the genuine goods it was much easier to deceive the public.”

Mr Thomas said prosecutors had relied on evidence from a handwriting expert and some stars themselves, including Wilkinson, Gerrard and Owen who have denied signing the items.

Some of them are expected to give evidence, or have statements read to the jury.

Walker, of Mountain View Close, Connah’s Quay, Deeside, and Madani, of Grange Road, Bramhall, Stockport, Greater Manchester, deny the charges and deny the items are forgeries.

The pair claim the goods were bought in good faith and from reputable sources.

Mr Thomas told the jury the bulk of the fraud took place between 2003, when England lifted the Rugby World Cup thanks to Jonny Wilkinson’s drop-kick, and 2005, when Liverpool FC recorded their historic fifth Champion’s League victory.

He said: “The defendants were involved in selling effectively worthless items to the public.

“Customers paid premium prices - hundreds or even thousands of pounds - in the belief that they were buying genuine goods, such as items autographed by their heroes.

“The defendants, we say, betrayed the trust of the public. In short, they were ripping fans off.”

Mr Thomas told the jury that in 2002 Madani had paid George Best compensation of £10,000 after he was caught selling fake autographs of the footballing legend.

He showed the jury an email in which Walker threatened staff at Jonny W, Wilkinson’s management company, with court action because the company had requested proof that the fly half’s autograph, which Sporting Icons was advertising for sale, was genuine.

He also told how David Beckham fans, who saw Sporting Icons’ adverts for an autographed picture of their idol, immediately spotted that it was a fake and reported the matter to Trading Standards, who are now prosecuting the case.

To the Victor Goes Bill Clinton's Autograph

While thousands of people struggled to get tickets at the Toyota Center to hear Barack Obama speak, and Hillary Rodham Clinton made an appearance at an Ohio rally, another battle ensued at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Houston.

This struggle, however, was not for the Democratic presidential nomination. It was for the autograph of former President Clinton, who was scheduled to speak at a fundraising dinner for his wife's campaign at the hotel the same evening.

As a few hundred people gathered outside one of the hotel's ballrooms on the third floor to hear Bill Clinton, David Insogna, 54, waited patiently for three hours on a bench in the back lobby with a small leather folder and a blue Sharpie.

Inside the folder was a picture of Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford in front of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University in College Station.

Another unidentified man, whom Insogna identified as another autograph seeker, sat a few feet behind him at a table with a pen in hand.

The two did not speak, but waited in silence.

Insogna said he has been collecting autographs of politicians, celebrities and sports figures for about 30 years. He said he has gotten every president's autograph in person from Richard Nixon to the current President Bush. Hillary Clinton and Obama are also a few more in his autograph roster.

While Insogna already had Bill Clinton's autograph, he said he wanted another one.

"I saw him at this same hotel when he was running for president," he said.

Secret Service agents patrolled the lobby with watchful eyes and an iron fist. As Clinton's arrival neared, the agents didn't allow anyone to leave the hotel until he made it to the ballroom safely.

Shortly before 9 p.m., Clinton's caravan drove into the valet area escorted by Houston police patrol cars.

Insogna made a dash for the door, scurrying past Secret Service agents. The other autograph seeker was hot on his trail, but was quickly caught by the agents and ushered back into the lobby.

A few minutes later, Insogna strolled back into the lobby with a grin of triumph on his face and the autographed picture in his hand.

"He shook a few people's hands, too," he said.

The best part of getting autographs is the challenge of getting the signature, Insogna said.

"Presidents are a little special," he said. "It's usually pretty hard to just get even a minute."

Amy Winehouse's Hubby Trading Wife's Signed Photos For Dope

English singer Amy Winehouse's husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who is currently in prison for perversion of justice, has been trading pictures of his wife for heroin. In order to feed his habit, Blake sold the autographed photos of his wife to inmates at the prison. In return for the cash he got, he would be given a few pounds worth of heroin.

"Blake has to pay for his gear somehow – and he has no qualms about cashing in on his wife's fame," the Sun quoted a source as saying. "“He'll take orders from other inmates then ask Amy to bring in signed photos of herself during visits. He usually gets her to write a little personalised note to make it look authentic," the source said. "Once he's back on the wing he'll swap these for Joeys," the source added.

"The boys think they'll get a few quid for them on eBay. It's not clear whether she knows exactly what"s going on... but she must find it strange that all these so-called prison hard men have suddenly become star struck Amy Winehouse fans," the source concluded. Civil's dealings were discovered on Feb 17, while he was recovering from an overdose in north London's Pentonville prison.

eBay Seller Boycott Starts Today

Activists opposed to eBay's (EBAY, Fortune 500) upcoming fee and policy changes are readying for a weeklong site boycott starting on Monday, with buyers and sellers waiting to see if this strike will succeed where past protests have failed.

The boycott, planned to run Feb. 18 - 25, is scheduled to overlap eBay's Feb. 20 rollout of significant changes announced last month.

Sellers say eBay's new policies are likely to cost them more money, but what's really inspired an outpouring of wrath is an adjustment to eBay's feedback system: sellers will no longer be able to leave negative commentary about their buyers. Critics say that will leave sellers vulnerable to negligent bidders and scammers.

"You get bad buyers as often as you get bad sellers," said M. Owens, a Severn, Md.-based seller of high-end dolls that typical go for several hundred dollars each. On such an expensive transaction, having a buyer cause trouble - by, for example, disputing the transaction and requesting a credit-card chargeback after they've already received their merchandise - can be financially devastating, she said.

Owens, who plans to participate in the boycott and avoid buying or selling on eBay next week, is also worried about the impact of a change to eBay's "best match" search algorithm, one of the least-publicized aspects of the upcoming changes. That search method, which will become eBay's default next month, favors sellers with high and detailed customer-satisfaction ratings. Low-volume sellers, like Owens, say this puts them at a disadvantage by burying their listings.

EBay spokesman Usher Lieberman said the company is taking a wait-and-see approach to the boycott talk

"At this point it's still premature for us to speculate," Lieberman said. "We're empathetic with our sellers and understand that they're concerned, and that some of them object to some of the changes we're implementing. On the other hand, we think we have very good reasons for what we're doing."

Rival sites court eBay sellers
EBay has no plans for listing-fee discounts or other special promotions next week to combat a potential boycott-related drop in listings, Lieberman said. This week, eBay ran a one-day discounted listing fee special offer on Wednesday, a move that increased listings on the site that day from around 12 million to 16 million.

That special offer was not prompted by the groundswell of seller discontent about the upcoming changes, according to Lieberman.

"We shouldn't be reading anything into that," he said. "We're always testing the price elasticity of our market."

Whether or not the planned boycott will be successful in affecting eBay's bottom line remains to be seen, but auction veterans say this degree of seller backlash to eBay fee hikes and other changes is unprecedented.

"I've been getting about 400 e-mails an hour," said Valerie Lennert, an Anaheim, Calif., doll-clothing merchant who became an unofficial spokeswoman for the boycott after posting a call-to-arms video on Google (GOOG, Fortune 500)'s YouTube.

Past eBay boycott attempts have fizzled, and this one may too, Lennert acknowledged. With millions of individuals selling on eBay, gaining critical mass for any organized action is extremely challenging. But simply getting eBay's attention is a worthy accomplishment, she said.

"There are a lot of people who are really upset, and if we choose to go somewhere else as a group, there won't be an eBay anymore," she said. "We don't think eBay understands that. They think they're invincible, and they don't seem to listen to what we need. Even if listings don't go down, we're reached the main goal: to let them know how upset we are. I'm pretty sure they know that at this point."

Kid Rock in the House!

Timing is everything when it comes to photographs and autographs . . . and that was the case yesterday afternoon in St. Louis. As I arrived at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in St. Louis for a charity event (that was supposed to have Harrison Ford as its special guest), I spotted two tour buses running along the side of the hotel. Knowing that Kid Rock was in town for a show last night, I was pretty confident that one of the buses belonged to him. Sure enough, about two minutes later, he popped out the hotel door sporting the latest in full-length fur coats. Although he didn't have much to say, he took time to sign autographs and take photographs for myself and three other fans.

Oh, that charity event . . . Harrison didn't show. He flies his own plane and decided the weather was too messy to make the trip. Thanks again, Kevin!

Company Announces Way to Put Stars Autographs on Sports Collectibles

Hypedupsports.com is offering its customers an opportunity to send memorabilia to Upper Deck for their top athletes to autograph. These exclusive athletes include Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant.

"This is a great opportunity to make memorabilia unique and special," said Cody Rose, CEO and founder of Hyped Up Sports. Every item signed will be witnessed by an Upper Deck representative and authenticated immediately. To take advantage of this program, the customer has to email hypedupsports @ yahoo.com, log onto www.hypedupsports.com, or call 406-697-9188 and give a description of the item that they would like signed. This is done so Hyped Up Sports can verify that the collectible will be on the athletes signing schedule. Then a private checkout page will be issued to the customer along with all of the shipping information. The tentative signing schedule for Michael Jordan is late February. Lebron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant are set for spring, either April or May. Tiger Woods is set for late July. An exact date is not issued because the athletes have their own schedules.

Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant are able to sign any piece of memorabilia. A few of the popular items include jerseys, balls, cards, photos and paintings. Product availability is extremely limited so customers need to act fast if they wish to take advantage of the program. Hypedupsports.com has already begun receiving orders.

Hypedupsports.com is a new online business out of Billings, MT, that deals with rare and authentic sports memorabilia. CEO, Cody Rose, has 12 years experience dealing with collectibles and recently became affiliated with Upper Deck. Through their partnership with Upper Deck, www.hypedupsports.com has taken its business to another level. Their website, and online marketplace, features hundreds of authenticated autographed memorabilia. This is quickly becoming the number one site for collectors and fans alike.

Clemens Autograph Seekers May Have Broken Federal Law

Any members of the House oversight committee or their staff who asked Roger Clemens for an autograph during his tour of the Capitol over the past week might have violated a federal law against soliciting things of value from people with interests before the committee, several lawyers with expertise in Congressional ethics laws said.

In addition, if a staff member or a member of the committee had Clemens autograph a baseball, that would apparently violate a House ethics ban against taking a gift valued at more than $50, the lawyers said.

Clemens’s entourage here said he autographed scores of items Thursday and Friday while visiting 19 of the 40 members of the committee, which is set to take his testimony Wednesday. Clemens and his lawyers were back Tuesday, visiting more committee members in advance of the public hearing.

“They shouldn’t have been asking him to autograph things because no matter what it’s worth, there’s a prohibition against soliciting gifts of any value,” said Bernadette Sargeant, a lawyer in Washington who worked as counsel for the House Ethics Committee until late 2004.

“You’re definitely not supposed to do it if it’s linked to any action you’re taking or being asked to take,” she said in a telephone interview. “That’s a problem if he’s going around meeting with members of the House oversight committee.”

Another Congressional ethics expert, Jan Witold Baran, a partner in the law firm of Wiley Rein & Fielding in Washington, said, “It would be like O. J. Simpson giving an autographed football to Judge Ito.”

A lawyer for Clemens, Rusty Hardin, said Tuesday that he had “no idea” whether Clemens had signed baseballs in members’ offices. Joe Householder, director of Public Strategies Inc., a public relations firm in Houston working with Clemens’s lawyers here, said Clemens had autographed mostly paper and some balls and a baseball card in the hallways of the House office buildings.

No staffers were identified Tuesday. Staff people in five offices visited by Clemens said they had not asked for autographs. One staff member for Diane E. Watson, Democrat of California, said Clemens had signed some baseballs for another office, but that staff member then declined to provide details or his name.

Lawyers for Brian McNamee, whose account of injecting Clemens at least 16 times with performance-enhancing drugs is the main subject of the hearing on Wednesday, had objected to the private meetings Clemens and his lawyers had with committee members, saying it was inappropriate lobbying. They have not raised the issue of gifts.

Householder said staffers of some committee members’ offices asked Clemens for autographs and to have their photographs taken with him. He said he did not know if any of committee members did.

“Roger’s the kind of guy, I’ve never seen him say no to an autograph unless he was running late for something,” Householder said.

Although Clemens and his fans in Congress might not have realized they were violating the rules, they were, three ethics experts said in interviews this week.

Kathleen Clark, a law professor at Washington University of St. Louis, said a prohibited gift under House ethics rules can be any “item having monetary value.”

“So it looks like an autograph can be a gift,” Clark said in a telephone interview, noting that Clemens is one of the most decorated pitchers in baseball history.

An exception to that ban is gifts worth less than $50. But Clemens’s autographed baseballs appear to be worth more than that. They are for sale at prices of $99 and $149 on eBay.

Even more of a problem than receiving such a gift, Clark said, would be soliciting one. In that case, under federal law, there is no exception for smaller gifts.

Title 5 Section 7353 of the United States Code, defining government misconduct, prohibits federal employees from soliciting anything of value from a person “whose interests may be substantially affected by the performance or nonperformance of the individual’s official duties.”

That may be what separates Clemens from actors who have been known to sign autographs when visiting Capitol Hill.

Representative Mark E. Souder, Republican of Indiana, who refused to meet with Clemens, said it would be “logical” for some staff and even members to seek Clemens’s autograph because actors who come to the Capitol pose for and sign photographs. Asked about the House ethics rule, in an interview Tuesday, Souder said he thought there was an exception for autographs.

But Clark said there was no exception for soliciting things of value from someone whose interests may be affected by the office. “So if any of the members of the committee or the staffers involved in preparing questions for the hearing solicited Clemens’s autograph, that may have violated the prohibition on soliciting gifts,” Clark said.

Sargeant agreed. “They’re not supposed to solicit gifts,” she said. “Roger Clemens has a marketable value on his autograph right now, as he should know very well. I’m not trying to impugn him, but his signatures are worth money.”

Sargeant added: “Staff members might say it’s a commemorative thing, but technically it isn’t a commemorative thing. And if they say it’s an innocent mistake, that doesn’t matter.”

The ethics experts said people who violated the rule could take care of it by returning the items to Clemens.

Kevin's Week In Phoenix

I'm back from a week in sunny Phoenix, Arizona, and here's a recap of my celebrity encounters:

First up is former NFL head coach, Sam Wyche. He stopped for a photograph after his presentation at the NFL Experience on Sunday, February 27. He's best known for developing the "no huddle" offense and for leading the Cincinnati Bengals to the 1988 AFC Championship.

A couple of days later, we attended a lecture and book signing at the Poisoned Pen book store in Scottsdale featuring television writer and producer Stephen J. Cannell. Cannell, who is best known for his work on the Rockford Files, A-Team, and 21 Jump Street (to name just a few), gave a in-depth and very interesting presentation on his life in television and now as an author. He detailed how he got his start and how he's dealt with his dyslexia. Following his presentation and a Q and A session, he sat down to greet, sign books, and take photographs with fans. And, you have to like a bookstore that provides the guest with the correct pen to sign . . . a blue Sharpie!

The next night, we stopped by the Barnes and Noble in the Desert Ridge Center in Phoenix for an acoustic performance and CD signing by Lisa Loeb. Loeb entertained the crowd of about 200 with a six song set and then followed up with a meet and greet. gladly signed her new CD, The Purple Tape, for me along with a promo CD single of "I Do." And, she got up to pose for each and every fan!

After departing the book store, we headed downtown for dinner at Bianco's Pizzeria. It was our second visit and it was just as good as the first! Without a doubt, it's the best pizza I've ever eaten! Chris Bianco is the owner and chef, and has won food's top prize, The James Beard Award. Chris gladly signed a menu and invited back to the kitchen for this photo.

My final celebrity encounter happened as we were walking the street surrounding the University of Phoenix Stadium, home of last Sunday's Super Bowl 42. There walking with his wife and grandkids was NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown. Most football experts consider Brown the best running back of all time. While he declined to sign, he stopped long enough for me to snap this shot.

Kevin...thanks for sharing! Lon

Canadian Wins Sir John A. Macdonald's Autograph With $7,850 Bid

Jason Kelly said it was his duty as a Canadian to bring it back home.

The "it" is a card bearing what is believed to be the signature of Canada's first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald.

The card was put up for auction on eBay last week by a woman in Worcester, Mass., and the highest bidder on Tuesday night turned out to be the 31-year-old Ottawa resident.

Kelly spent a whopping $7,850 on the yet-to-be-authenticated signature — a price he said he thought would be higher.

"I honestly didn't think that I would actually be able to … afford it," Kelly said. "I thought that it would end up going for a lot higher than what it did."

But that amount suited the card's owner just fine.

Patti Kelley said she couldn't believe her eyes as the auction wound down and the price skyrocketed in the last 10 seconds by $3,000.

"I start all my auctions at 99 cents," Kelley told the Canadian Press from her Massachusetts home Tuesday night. "This is the biggest sale, and it's just amazing!"

She said she got the card in a large lot she purchased at a private auction in Massachusetts, run by a dealer who has been in business for over 35 years.

Among the early bidders for the Macdonald signature was the Conservative Party of Canada.

"We were prepared to take a modest risk on this piece with no provenance," said Conservative party spokesman Ryan Sparrow.

When media reports of the card sent the bid price escalating by more than 500 per cent, the Tories stopped bidding.

It was those media reports that caught the attention of Kelly. He said he saw the story on television Monday and that's when he first became aware of the item's existence.

Jewel in buyer's collection
It's not Kelly's first autograph either. He said he owns several signatures from other Canadian prime ministers including John Diefenbaker and William Lyon Mackenzie King. However, he said, a signature from Macdonald, who was prime minister from 1867 to 1873 and again from 1878 to 1891, would be the jewel of his collection.

"I'm a big lover of Canadian history and I'm always trying to perpetuate that in my family and in the people around me," Kelly said.

Jeremy Diamond, director of programs for the Dominion Institute, which is dedicated to preserving Canada's history and artifacts, said his organization is pleased to hear the card was sold to someone living in Canada.

"It'll be interesting to see as this plays out over the next little while if we can create an accurate story of the signature and what it was part of," Diamond said.

"Canadians' knowledge seems to decline every year on who the first prime minister was of Canada, so maybe after some of the publicity around this, we kind of raise awareness for who this man was and what kind of impact he had on Canada."

Kelly said he intends to contact the Dominion Institute to discuss how they could make the signature part of a display for everyone to enjoy — assuming it turns out to be the real deal.

Back in Worcester, Kelley is trying to decide what to do with her new windfall. Early plans have her reinvesting some of the money by purchasing another lot of items.

"I'm gonna keep my eBay business going, 'cause I like to see items go to people that, you know, are really interested in them."

Former Players Quietly Lend a Hand to Teammates in Need

By Gary Thorne, special for USA TODAY - And now this really good word from and about MLB-B.A.T.

As the Congressional hearings go on and the finger-pointing continues, the good news, as usually happens, is on the less-publicized front.

The Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T.) held its "Going to Bat for B.A.T. Dinner" in New York last week. The sold-out crowd of some 1,200 was again treated to a night of Hall of Famers, memories, autographs and guest players from today and yesterday.

The cause was the baseball family, a widely inclusive term in B.A.T. circles.

B.A.T. was formed in 1986 to help those in need who had been or are involved with professional baseball — from players, families, umpires, scouts and managers to front office personnel.

The services are offered whenever the organization receives information of a need and has the ability to help — as the B.A.T. mission statement says — with a "measure of comfort and dignity."

Most of what the group does is never reported. Only when a recipient desires to come forward, as usually happens each year at the B.A.T. dinner, is there some public inkling of the help given.

Since 1986, B.A.T. has donated over $16 million to 2,100 members of the baseball family.

Bob Gibson was the dinner chairman and Joe Morgan and I co-hosted this year. Robin Roberts is a regular and a member of the board along with Morgan and Gibson. Among the other 125 current and former players who spent time with the patrons and signed autographs prior to the dinner were Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal and Luis Aparicio.

Two award winners were also on hand. Dmitri Young of the Nationals was honored with the Frank Slocum Award for his contributions to B.A.T., citing his involvement since 2002.

Mets All-Star third baseman David Wright, who said he was in awe of the players present at the dinner, received the Bart Giamatti Award for his work with children through his own foundation.

At a time when MLB is taking its share of knocks, the good work of B.A.T. should not be lost.

Jim Martin, the executive director, has dedicated his life to the organization's work. He loves to say he just delegates work and gives credit to others for nights like the dinner. However, on a daily basis, he is deeply involved in the individual cases his office receives. "That's what gets me going in the morning," he says.

There are plenty of stories from the NFL today about forgotten players who are in need and say they cannot find the help necessary from their player organization. B.A.T. has become that available resource for all of pro baseball's family.

The effort now is to engage current players, such as Young and Wright, to understand that the dollars were not always there for older players and that the need can be great.

The current players have responded. B.A.T. president Ted Sizemore and chairman Bobby Mercer have visited all the major league teams at spring training over the last few years to enlist their help.

The players have donated over $4.5 million as part of the largest fund-raising program in the organization's history.

One does not necessarily have to be old to need assistance. Former Mets catcher Barry Lyons was back at the dinner this year in appreciation of the help he received when his family's home was wiped out by hurricane Katrina.

Of all the ovations at the annual dinner, and there were many, none was louder than the one for Mercer.

Having fought his own battle against cancer a year ago and returned to Yankee Stadium last opening day to a thunderous welcome, Murcer returned to the dinner this year to take over as chairman.

Mercer exemplifies the dedication of the staff and officers of an organization that has gotten it right.

B.A.T.'s season never ends and the baseball family is better for it.

eBay Auction Pulled: Seems PSA/DNA Slabbed FDR Proxy Signature

This account was reprinted from Autograph Alert news article:

On page sixty of Charles Hamilton’s Collecting Autographs & Manuscripts, it lists seven proxy signatures of FDR and illustration #6 clearly matches the signature PSA/DNA has authenticated 'as genuine.'

There are also references in the four page signature study of FDR by presidential autograph expert Andreas Wiemer. On page two of this popular study, seven examples of this same secretary FDR signature are illustrated.

This item was listed on eBay (Item #320212695224) with a 'Buy It Now Price' of $1,499.00. The auction was pulled not long after several collectors and dealers noticed the problem and reported it to eBay and the seller. Most interesting, the seller had indicated his faith in 3rd party authenticators. The seller’s return policy is: “No Returns on PSA, JSA or GAI Authenticated Items.”
