AutographAlert.com Compiling 'Watch List' For Collectors

In an effort to warn autograph collectors about inconsistencies associated with dealers using 3rd party autograph authentication companies, AutographAlert.com recently stated in an article:

Over and over again, many collectors have learned if the autographed item comes with a COA from a third party authenticating company, red flags must go up. It is our opinion not to support those card shops and sellers who use third party authenticating companies. We recommend doing business with companies/auction house and shops who guarantee what they sell with a lifetime money back guarantee.

Many of our readers are requesting a list of those shops, auction houses and autograph sellers who support third party authenticators in order to avoid these endless problems. We are in the process of compiling a list!

No date has been given as to when this list will become available.

Prova Group Takes on Counterfeit Artwork, Ensures Authenticity for Collectors

Fear of purchasing counterfeit artwork soon will be a thing of the past for many art collectors, thanks to digital technology from Prova Group, Inc.

The company has signed a letter of understanding with Artfest International, Inc., which prints and sells limited-edition, signed and numbered fine art and photography. Under the agreement, Prova will provide Artfest with a patent-pending secure digital system that ensures signature authenticity and helps mitigate fraud.

"Fraud and counterfeiting are prevalent in the fine arts marketplace, and until now, art collectors had to rely on paper certificates and numbered stickers that assert a piece's authenticity," said Edward Vakser, chief executive officer for Artfest. "Unfortunately, paper and label documentation can be even easier to forge than the artwork itself."

Charlie Humphreyson, chief executive officer for Prova, said his company's solution provides the efficiency and security of digital technology by replacing the function of paper certificates, just as e-mail replaced paper memos.

"When a collector purchases artwork or photography from Artfest, a Prova Tag(TM) will already be affixed to it. Prova's electronic tag provides a unique "fingerprint" of data, which is linked to a record in the Prova registry," Humphreyson said. "The Prova Tag then can be used to easily verify the item's authenticity via the tag data and a comparison to our online database. Also, if the artwork is ever lost or stolen, the Prova Tag can aid in the recovery process."

"We showcase pieces created by renowned artists whose work is in high demand," said Artfest's Vakser. "By ensuring the authenticity of each work of art, we are protecting the integrity of our company and providing peace of mind for our discriminating customers."

This is Prova Group's first venture in the fine arts marketplace. Previously, the company has focused its digital solution on the sports collectibles market for autographs and game-worn equipment. For non-Prova tagged signed sports memorabilia, the chances of an item being authentic range between two percent and 50 percent, according to leading sports collectible experts.

"Prova's technology has already made a significant and positive impact for sports memorabilia collectors," said Dan Werner, Prova's vice president of marketing and business. "They can purchase that signed football or jersey they've always wanted with confidence - as long as it carries a Prova Tag. By teaming up with Artfest, we'll now be able to provide that same assurance for collectors of limited edition, artist-signed fine art."

10th Annual Roger Ebert Film Festival

Our friend Kevin attended the 10th Annual Roger Ebert Film Festival and posted the following:

Oscar-winning director Ang Lee was one of the featured guests at the Saturday session of the 10th Annual Roger Ebert Film Festival in downtown Champaign, Illinois. Lee, a 1980 University of Illinois graduate, was in attendance for a screening and Q and A of his 2003 film, 'Hulk'.

Just as I was pulling into the parking lot, I spotted Lee walking up the street towards the historic Virginia Theater, home to the Festival. Unfortunately, by the time I got the car parked and ran inside, he was being whisked away to the VIP room to prepare for the screening.

Following the screening and a very interesting Q and A session, Lee took a seat at the edge of the stage to sign autographs, take photographs, and meet fans. He stayed about 10 minutes before being pulled away in anticipation of his plane trip back home to New York. In that time, I managed to get a signed 8 x 10 and the photo above. I got another signed photograph as he exited the theater to catch his ride to the airport.

While waiting for the evening feature film to start, I got to visit again with actor Joe Pantiliano. "Joey Pants" had been in town for the entire festival, including a screening of his film 'Canvas' on Thursday night. He gladly signed a photo I had taken with him on Thursday, commenting on how much he looked like his cousin, Kelly.

Saturday evening's feature was the 1987 film 'Housekeeping' starring actress Christine Lahti. Lahti and the movie's director, Bill Forsyth, both stopped to take photos and to sign my Housekeeping movie poster as they entered the theater. Lahti, probably best remembered for her Emmy-winning role on Chicago Hope, was especially interested in seeing the poster and asked where I had located the piece.

This past Thursday, during the Festival's second day, I got photographs and signatures from two English actors, Timothy Spall and Rufus Sewell. Both were at the Festival for a screening of their 1996 film 'Hamlet'. Spall is best known for his role as Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter films.

Thanks again, Kevin!

University Opens 'Autographs of American Leaders' Exhibit

The Bob Burke Autographs of American Leaders exhibit at the University of Oklahoma will open with a public ceremony 2 p.m. Monday on the main floor of Bizzell Memorial Library, 401 W. Brooks St.

A collection of letters, documents, photographs and writings signed by every president and vice president of the United States, from George Washington to George W. Bush, has been given to the OU libraries.

The gift from OU alumnus Bob Burke also includes writings, signatures and documents of 43 people who have served as speaker of the United States House of Representatives, more than 600 political campaign buttons and other presidential memorabilia.

The collection is a significant gift, said Sul H. Lee, dean of University Libraries.

"The presidential signatures and political campaign pins the collection contains are wonderful examples of rare historical Americana," Lee said. "This extensive collection will interest political history scholars and everyone who wishes to learn more about the leaders who have shaped our great nation. I am pleased that the University of Oklahoma Libraries can display part of this unique collection in a permanent exhibit in Bizzell Memorial Library."

Burke is a practicing attorney in Oklahoma City and native of Broken Bow. In addition to practicing law, he is a historian and author of more than 40 books, including "Bryce Harlow: Mr. Integrity," which received a Pulitzer Prize nomination. In 2002, Burke gave some 2,000 Bibles -- many notable and rare -- to the OU libraries.

Burke began collecting autographs when he was a junior high school student. He worked laboriously for 30 years to accumulate genuine writing from every president.

The exhibit is open during regular library hours, which are posted at http://libraries.ou.edu/info/hours.asp. Normal library hours when OU is in session are 7:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 2 a.m. Sunday.

For more information about the ceremony, call Public Affairs at 325-3784.

As Players Bulked Up, Value of Memorabilia Weakened

Before steroids became a part of our national pastime, my baseball memorabilia was all the rage.

But in recent years, dark clouds have formed over my den, where baseballs, bats, jerseys, trading cards and action photographs autographed by the likes of Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa are on display.

When the term clean base hit had only one definition, those items fetched a pretty penny. Then came talk, and later Congressional testimony, about the inflating of biceps and statistics. As a result, certain pieces of my collection have deflated in value — as have items in dens, bedrooms and basements across the country — and an entire industry has lost considerable juice.

“The steroid clouds hanging over our industry really irks me,” said Andrew Levy, the president of Wish You Were Here Productions, a sports marketing agency in New York that represents athletes in memorabilia and appearance deals. “Investing in sports memorabilia is very similar to investing in the stock market. In both cases, bad news can hurt the value of whatever stock you might be holding.”

Collectors like me who own shares in Barry, Mark, Sammy and others who have been tainted by association with performance-enhancing drugs, view books naming specific players as depressing shareholders’ reports. The gloomy portrait was painted in “Game of Shadows,” by two reporters for The San Francisco Chronicle who wrote that Bonds began using steroids after the 1998 season, and “Juiced” and “Vindicated,” written by José Canseco.

Then there is the Mitchell report, which has injected serious doubt in the minds of Roger Clemens fans who were once certain he was a flame-throwing superman who possessed powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men like Bob Gibson and Nolan Ryan.

Above the jukebox in my den is an autographed photograph of Clemens, pumping his fist after a one-hit shutout against the Seattle Mariners in Game 4 of the 2000 American League Championship Series. The photograph, which I bought for $200 in 2003, is now worth about $350.

It comes with a certificate of authenticity. But I cannot say the same about Clemens.

Scott Stimell, who owns Cardboard Memories, a sports collectibles store in East Northport, N.Y., appraised the photograph.

“If any of this Clemens steroids stuff is proven true, your photo will likely diminish in value,” Stimell said. “But it will always be worth something. After all, he is Roger Clemens.”

As a baseball fan, I hope that Clemens is telling the truth about never having used steroids. As a collector, I know that if he is caught lying, his photograph becomes another bad investment cluttering the walls and shelves of my den, like my McGwire bat and my Sosa ball, each autographed and game-used, and an autographed Bonds baseball card from his earlier, scrawnier days with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Great Memorabilia Depression is merely another side effect of steroids in baseball.

“Everyone who is in this business has boxes and boxes of something that has decreased in value,” Levy said with a sigh. “But the industry will survive; it always has.”

Stimell said steroids were only the latest variable in determining the monetary value of sports memorabilia. Other factors, he said, include how an athlete is portrayed in the news media.

“Michael Vick merchandise has completely tanked, while Derek Jeter’s stuff remains rock solid,” Stimell said. He listed variables like Hall of Fame credentials, the scarcity of autographs, the level of statistical achievements and the links to historic victories, with Joe Namath and Eli Manning the best examples.

“Some investments are safer than others,” Stimell added. “But a lot of investing, just like on Wall Street, is based on speculation, and people who invest in autographs can turn a good profit if an athlete goes on to do something extraordinary.”

Alex Rodriguez could be one of those athletes. At 32, he has hit more than 520 home runs, and could eclipse Bonds’s career record, 762.

I own a baseball autographed by Rodriguez that Stimell said was worth about $450. It sits between baseballs signed by Jeter and Sosa, and two display cases from my autographed Joe DiMaggio ball.

In “Vindicated,” Canseco wrote that he had introduced Rodriguez to a steroids supplier. But I have a lot of faith in A-Rod — and a little bit of stock, too.

In addition, Bass Pro Shops and the U.S. Army will operate outdoor activity areas, and Turtle Wax, the NASCAR Technical Institute and Hershey's will also be on hand with interactive displays.

Michigan Family's Autograph Collection is 100+ Years Old

It is a request ballplayers get every time they put on the uniform.

But when Margaret Lapham asks a player to sign her book it usually stops a guy in his tracks. Even one like Curtis Granderson.

"I'd be honored if you'd sign my book," she told the Detroit Tigers centerfielder at Tuesday's West Michigan Whitecaps game.

Granderson grabbed a pen and added his name to the book.

"It's amazing that, one, she has it, two, she's met all these different people, and three, she allowed me to join in there as well. So I definitely appreciate that and I'm very honored to be in that autograph book," said Granderson.

"My grandpa and my dad started this book over 100 years ago," Lapham told 24 Hour News 8.

It is loaded with Hall of Fame signatures, including "Cy Young, Roger Hornsby, Mickey Cochrane."

"I know when George Kell signed it, he said, 'Margaret, that's worth a lot.' But I said, 'It's my hobby. I'm not selling it.'"

The list goes on and on, as do the stories of signings, which are almost as priceless as the book.

"One that I thought would be the easiest is Al Kaline. I was down in Lakeland (Florida) and when they came in in the morning I would get their autographs, and I think he had a fight with his wife," Lapham remembers.

There is even a great story behind the one that got away.

"I always asked my dad why he doesn't have Ty Cobb because he used to watch Ty Cobb play. See, I'm originally from Detroit but he said Ty Cobb wasn't easy to get anything from, so he never got Ty Cobb," said Lapham.

With all the Hall of Famers in the book, you might be surprised to know her favorite - Brandon Inge of the Tigers.

"I asked Brandon to write it so I could read it. So he printed his name then he wrote behind it, then he put an arrow. He says, 'That's how I sign it.'"

Lapham said she has never had the book appraised because she doesn't intend to sell it. Besides, how to you put a price tag on a family heirloom like this?

"Yeah, it's priceless," she said.

Lapham wants everyone to know that she keeps the book in a safety deposit box.

24 Hour News 8 talked to a member of the American Memorabilia auction house in Las Vegas and sent him pictures of the Young and Hornsby signatures. The member said those signatures, on their own, would fetch between $1,000 and $1,500 each.

Celebrity-Signed Baseballs Can Be A Real Hit At Auction

Occasionally a customer will tell me they're going to meet a celebrity, and ask what they should bring with them if they have a chance to get an autograph. I recommend bringing an official baseball along. Celebrity signed baseballs can be very valuable, even if that celebrity doesn't have anything to do with baseball.

Baseball players are often asked to sign baseballs. There are old newsreels that show Babe Ruth sitting on a hotel balcony next to a few bushel barrels full of baseballs. There's a large crowd of people below the balcony. Ruth is signing the baseballs and tossing them out to the crowd.

Current superstars such as Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter sign for companies like Topps, Upper Deck and Steiner Sports, in addition to signing for fans at the park. There's a good supply of their signed baseballs, so even though the demand might be high, the prices aren't as high as for celebrities who don't sign many baseballs. Many celebrities are rarely, if ever, asked to sign a baseball.

A Barack Obama single signed baseball recently sold in a Mastro auction for $2,300. The signature was authenticated by PSA/DNA, and graded Gem Mint 10. That means the ball and signature were both in top condition. If Obama is elected president of the United States in November, the value of that ball should climb much higher. If Hillary Clinton beats him out for the Democratic nomination, the ball will still be valuable, but probably won't be worth $2,300.

One of my customers has a friend who owns a Fidel Castro single signed baseball. If that ball and signature are in top condition, it would probably sell in an auction for at least $3,000 to $5,000. Castro was a pitcher as a youngster and is a big fan of baseball. But there aren't many of his single signed baseballs in the marketplace.

A baseball signed by John F. Kennedy recently sold for $37,700. President Kennedy signed the ball while on a trip to Costa Rica in March 1963. It was a single signed ball on the sweet spot, and had a signature strength of 8 or 9 on a scale of 1 to 10.

A few years ago I was outbid on a baseball signed by Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. At the time, that ball ended over $1,000. If more than one celebrity signs a baseball, the ball can still be very valuable. There needs to be a link to their careers, or a theme to the signatures. For instance, a baseball signed by the entire cast of "The Sopranos" would sell for hundreds.

Finally, for all you Beatles fans out there. "I don't care too much for money, money can't buy me love?" But $20,000 to $30,000 should be able to get me, or you, a baseball signed by John, Paul, George and Ringo. That is if you can find one!

Calendar Fills for CMA Fest Stadium Shows

Carrie Underwood, Trace Adkins, Sara Evans and Taylor Swift are among the acts that have been previously announced as performers during the LP Field stadium shows at June's CMA Music Festival. But with single-day tickets about to go on sale Saturday, the exact dates of those individual performances across the event's four-day run is only now becoming clearer.

Sugarland, for example, is pegged for the first night, June 5, while subsequent concerts will include Faith Hill (June 6), Alan Jackson (June 7) and two artists returning after a lengthy absence — Dwight Yoakam, making his first appearance in 20 years; Randy Travis, back after 10 years away — appearing on the closing night (June 8).

Single-day concert tickets are priced at $40 and $30. In addition, tickets for the exhibit hall — in which artists sign autographs and take photos with fans — are being made available on a daily basis for the first time, for $20.

The complete lineup for the stadium shows has not yet been announced. Following are the artists who've been confirmed thus far, and the nights they'll be featured:

• June 5: Sugarland, Taylor Swift, Montgomery Gentry, Jewel, Kellie Pickler
• June 6: Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, Josh Turner, Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum
• June 7: Alan Jackson, Trace Adkins, Rodney Atkins, Kenny Rogers, Craig Morgan, Little Big Town
• June 8: Dwight Yoakam, Sara Evans, Billy Ray Cyrus, Randy Travis, Bucky Covington, James Otto

Mariah Carey Stiffs Fans at Signing Session

MARIAH CAREY fans booed the pop superstar at an autograph signing on Thursday (17Apr08) when she showed up two hours late and left before signing albums for devotees who had waited eight hours to meet her.

The singer, who was promoting her new album E=MC2 at Universal City Walk in Los Angeles, left tired fans fuming when she stopped signing and "went home".

Carey fans, who waited in line to meet their heroine, have flooded the Internet to slam the diva, claiming she showed up two hours late and didn't stay around long enough to meet and greet the 1,000 devotees who were promised time with the singer.

One angry fan says, "The first 1,000 people who bought her album from (record store) FYE got a guaranteed meet and greet (wristband), but she left with more than a hundred people still waiting.

"Some fans booed and others even trashed their copies of Mariah's new CD and yelled profanities at her."

Rugby Legends Raper, Langlands and Gasnier Refuse Autographs

ST. GEORGE Immortals are refusing to give random autographs because of bounty hunters "making a quick buck" from their signatures on eBay.

Tired of profiteering pen-holders, legendary Dragons trio John Raper, Graeme Langlands and Reg Gasnier recently made a "commercial decision" to refrain from signing non-authorised memorabilia in the Centenary season.

All three greats fronted the launch of the Dragons' heritage jersey on Tuesday night at St George Leagues Club, where members were told private items would not be autographed.

The announcement sparked disappointment among some fans, who contacted The Daily Telegraph this week.

Raper and Langlands yesterday confirmed they had been advised not to autograph items such as jerseys, books and caps that were not endorsed by the club or their management.

"It's correct that we've decided not to sign everything, but we don't want to say more than that," Raper said.

The trio's manager, Ron Bennett, explained the change was made to protect his clients' "intellectual property".

"The boys get inundated all the time from people wanting signatures and in many cases, we've seen the items go straight on eBay for monetary gain," Bennett said.

"Memorabilia is now their main source of income, especially this year.

"But its value is reduced when people trade off their reputations to make a quick buck. It's my job to protect their intellectual property."

Bennett, who is also St George Illawarra's operations manager, stressed the Immortals had not stopped signing all private items.

"They will still do things for children and the like," he said.

"However, our approach is to make the signature out to an individual."

Peter Trad, a Dragons diehard who attended the launch, supports the ban.

"It was a good night and they actually auctioned off some stuff that was already signed," Trad said.

Oskar Schindler Signed Photograph Up For Auction

The last remaining autographed photo of holocaust hero OSKAR SCHINDLER is to be sold at auction.

The German industrialist, made famous in Steven Spielberg's Oscar-winning Schindler's List, was responsible for saving 1,400 Jews from death during World War II.

Schindler signed the photo in 1949 before giving it to a family he had taken in during the war. It currently belongs to Sholamit Vesengred, the son of two Holocaust survivors, who hopes to attract bids of up to $150,000 (GBP75,000) when the picture goes under the hammer later this year (08).

And he has revealed he plans to get in contact with actor Liam Neeson - who played Schindler in the 1993 film - in the hope he'll join bidders and bump up the price.

James Bond 007: Goldfinger - The Reunion

Andy Boyle and Gareth Owen from Bondstars.com with Shirley, Honor, Tania and Margaret

On Sunday 13th April 2008 over 120 guests plus over a dozen cast and crew members came together to celebrate what is considered to be a Bond classic - Goldfinger.

What started as a screening with a few special guests turned eventually into an historic reunion the likes of which will never be repeated!

At 10:45 the doors were opened and our attendees enjoyed refreshments and mingled with our special guests - Norman Wanstall, Shirley Eaton, Tania Mallett, Margaret Nolan, Caron Gardner, Guy Hamilton and Burt Kwouk. The Cinemastore were also on hand to sell Bond goodies to eager Bond fans. A little later more special guests arrived in the guise of production designers Peter Murton, Sir Kenneth Adam with his Lady Adam, Peter Lamont, lyricist Leslie Bricusse and his wife Yvonne Romain, and Martin Benson.

On show was the one of a kind prototype Corgi DB5 which was kindly loaned to us by Corgi UK. It's value was said to be over £15,000!

Dave Worrall and our guests braved the weather to tour the studio locations used in Goldfinger, including the ornamental gardens for the location of the statue - which is the first victim of Oddjob's deadly bowler hat - then on to the paddock tank where the pre-title sequence was filmed, the covered way and the backlot which is where the exterior of the Fort Knox set was built and Goldfinger's Kentucky Ranch. The Aston Martin DB5 meanwhile awaited the tour in the covered way - scene of the famous car chase.

After the tour and the April showers, the warmth of Theatre 7 was very welcoming as our guests took their seats for what would be a very memorable afternoon, starting with the newly restored and remastered version of Goldfinger. However, there was one more surprise - to introduce the film was Pussy Galore herself, Honor Blackman, to a well deserved standing ovation.

For a film over 40 years old the quality of both sound and picture was simply stunning. We have to thank our friends at Eon Productions and Park Circus who kindly loaned us this new version of the film.

After a short break, the Q & A session took place with Golden Girl Shirley Eaton and Tania Mallett reminiscing about their time on the film where Shirley was again asked to explain the procedure for covering her body in gold paint - a question she never tires of answering with great enthusiasm.

Tania chatted about how she was offered the lead in From Russia With Love, but declined as she 'was not an actress' and said she'd prefer 'a smaller role to get started with'. Her wish was granted on the next film!

Leslie Bricusse chatted about the famous title song, and his other John Barry collaborations - even revealing he had penned lyrics for a possible title song for On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Put the words to that!

Next up were Burt Kwouk and Margaret Nolan. Margaret explained how the producers wanted her to model for the opening titles, but she said on the proviso they gave her a small part! Burt chatted about the ever enduring success of Bond, before our guest of the hour, director Guy Hamilton was welcomed to the stage.

Guy spoke about his four Bond films, and revealed he had been asked to helm Dr No, but could not for family reasons. He also spoke about how he is still not quite satisfied with the movie, and feels he could improve on some scenes. Is that really possible?!

There was one more surprise too. Before leaving the stage, Guy was presented with the Cinema Retro Outstanding Achievement award by Honor Blackman.

Bondstars.com has 2 exclusive items from our Goldfinger event on eBay, the first is a multisigned souvenir programme autographed by 12 special guests including Honor Blackman, Shirley Eaton and Peter Lamont. The second is a rare still signed by all three Bond girls - Shirley Eaton, Honor Blackman and Tania Mallet. Go to www.bondstars.com/ebay

Autograph Hunters Hit the Campaign Trail

Along with adoring fans and reporters, presidential candidates hitting the campaign trail this year face an additional demand on their attention: autograph hounds.

The autograph hunters, many of whom who post their quarry on eBay, lurk on rope lines, arrive early at campaign events, and dash up to candidates as they make the rounds among voters.

Autograph seekers also test the patience of the candidates' secret service guards, who reportedly get nervous at the site of someone reaching into a jacket to retrieve a pen.

As the race drags on well into its second year and the candidates grow weary, it's gotten harder to score a John Hancock from, say, John McCain.

"John McCain used to sign whatever you had. I once got eight things signed by him," eBay autograph dealer Christopher Purvis wrote in an e-mail. "Now, he will only do one item, if you are lucky enough to get him."

Democratic contender Barack Obama recently lost his cool with a pushy man whom he decided was "an eBay guy and I know it," when the man approached him several times on a visit to Philadelphia, asking for a photograph with him. Autograph dealers on eBay often post amateur photographs of the candidate signing something as evidence of an autograph's legitimate provenance.

"Senator, can I get a quick picture with you, please?" the man asked Obama.

"You are wearing me out, brother," the Illinois senator replied.

A campaign aide told the Washington Post the man had been seen outside Obama's hotel that morning and was seeking an autograph.

Items signed by the three remaining presidential candidates now run anywhere from just a few dollars to a few hundred on eBay, although the market has yet to peak, said Edward Bomsey, an Annandale, Virginia professional autograph dealer who said he doesn't work online.

"Most of the people who are getting them now are probably, and should rightfully, wait until the election is over," he said. "Whichever one of the three winds up becoming president, that autograph that somebody got in the rope line will be a very nice little piece of history with a good value attached to it."

Dodgers Drop Rule, Will Give All Autograph Seekers Access

The Dodgers, surrendering to the wishes of irate fans, announced today they have dropped a new rule and will allow all youngsters to seek autographs in Dodger Stadium in much the same way they have done for years.

No comment yet from the rich kids, but now everyone in the stadium will be given the same opportunity to stand on the dirt strip at the end of the Dodgers dugout and be ignored by the players while trying to get an autograph.

The Dodgers are still trying to keep the unwashed out of the field-level box seats, and in doing so have designated a taped-off area for autographs. On first glance, kids at the head of the line might have a better chance of getting an autograph than they did last year.

The Dentist, the team's new PR guy, said a large number of fans provided "data," using the team's e-mail address published on Page 2 this week. They apparently made it quite clear they were not happy about kids' being kept away from the players.

"I read the e-mails aloud to everyone here and it helped," the Dentist said. "We decided to allow everyone to enter the field level the way they have in previous years -- through the end of batting practice.

"We had been concerned about crowding on the field level, but that just doesn't seem to apply through batting practice.

"We'll try to funnel people down Aisle 27 to help with the cleanliness and occupancy problems in the field box seats, and we'll see what we can do about expanding the available area in center field for kids."

The Dodgers, who have been advertising new concession choices on the field-level concourse, have blocked entrance to the concourse except for those fans with field-level tickets.

All fans will now be allowed to use the new concession stands, but only through the end batting practice. The area will then be closed once again to everyone except the rich folk.

"We're not there yet," the Dentist said, when asked why such a restriction was necessary. "We'll see how everything works out, and maybe revisit the issue later."

What Is the Power of Autographs?

I can remember my dad coming home from a business trip and giving me a piece of yellow note paper with Lynn Swann's signature on it. I can remember pinning next to that autograph on my bulletin board a folded piece of white ruled notebook paper with Earl Campbell's handwriting, procured while he filmed a Skoal commercial on our school's football field in 1980 - though I don't have the actual memory of him signing it.

I can remember being solicited for an autograph at an airport in my early 20s by a young boy, remember signing my name in confusion and then taking in the look of disappointment on the boy's face as he realized I wasn't who he thought I was. He never told me whom he thought he had, and to this day I don't know.

In my entire lifetime, I don't think I've ever sought an autograph of my own more than once or twice. It just hasn't been my thing - perhaps it's shyness. As a boy, I collected many things - baseball cards, ticket stubs - but never autographs. Yet I recognize that for many people, they are treasured things - and I'm not talking about the business of selling them. As mere keepsakes, they have power.

But I can't say I'm not perplexed by this power. Is the source of it evidence of an encounter with greatness or celebrity? If so, how does that power transfer with the autograph - how does it retain its significance after you've passed it on? Is it somehow greater than a photograph of or with a celebrity? Is it somehow greater than pure, unadulterated memory? At their core, what makes autographs special?

These questions arise because of a controversy at Dodger Stadium, chronicled by T.J. Simers of the Times, about people - or more to the point, kids - finding dramatically reduced access to autographs this year. There's a lot of anger circling the issue. I'm not surprised by it, but I can't say I share it, because I still don't really quite comprehend autographs. They're simply not a part of the ballgame experience that I care about. In contrast to my desire for a foul ball, for example - I'd surely be up in arms if I got one this weekend and the Dodgers suddenly decreed I needed to throw it back, as in olden times - I'm dispassionate about them.

Perhaps what I wonder most about autographs is about children's interest. Nature or nurture: Do kids instinctively want autographs, or is the desire coached from elders?

I guess if someone handed me a bonafide autograph of Abraham Lincoln, I'd think that was pretty jaw-dropping. But I don't find myself needing Russell Martin's autograph, or Manny Mota's autograph. On the other hand, I find myself kind of wanting R.J. Reynolds, or Roy Campanella, or Zack Wheat. Not that I'd ever ask anyone for them. It's a very idiosyncratic, strange thing.

I hope this issue resolves itself properly, but mostly for the sake of peace in our times and happiness for our young ones and all that. It's probably my own flaw, but I'm not sure I'm in step with the majority position that there's an intrinsic need or right to get autographs at a baseball game. I don't contest it; I just don't share it.

Dodger Blues: Team's New Autograph Policy Has Many Fans Steamed

Check out this piece by Los Angeles Times columnist T.J. Simers. It could be a sign of things to come at other ballparks.

The issue? A new rule denies fans access to the field box seat level before games to try and secure autographs at Dodger Stadium -- unless of course, they have one of those pricey tickets.

Most teams allow fans down near the field up from when the gates open until a certain point before the game starts (typically 30 minutes or less). After all, being in that area is about the only way to get an autograph inside the ballpark (unless you have Scotty to beam you into the dugout or some seriously long arms out in the outfield).

I understand the team's concern -- its highest-paying ticket holders have some distractions if they get to the game early -- but it's just how it's been done since, oh, well, the beginning of time.

"I bleed Dodger blue," Héctor Javier Preciado said in one of Simers' columns. "I never felt that it was privileged royal blue."

For some reason, I don't think Tommy Lasorda would like this change.

May I Have Your Rather Valuable Autograph?

Imagine being asked to sign an autograph or pose for a photograph by every person passing on the street. Now imagine one memento seeker who won't take no for an answer. That seems to have happened to Sen. Barack Obama last week, when a man with a camera tried in vain to stop the presidential hopeful in Philadelphia.

Al Wittnebert, an elder statesman of the autograph business, saw video of the exchange. "I think Obama needs to get over himself," he says. "When you're in the public eye, especially running for office, you're supposed to kiss babies, pose for pictures. ... Whether [the fan] is selling it on eBay is irrelevant."

The man in question allegedly sought a picture from Obama several times that day. The senator's campaign says the man was a professional autograph reseller attempting to snag photos to accompany already valuable autographs.

But Wittnebert says seeking signatures and photographs from famous people is completely reasonable, especially from someone of Obama's stature. "That's the time to ask [Obama,] when he's on the campaign trail!" Wittnebert says. "If he gets into the White House, you have virtually no chance."

Wittnebert, chief financial officer of the Universal Autograph Collectors Club, is an autograph dealer and seeker. When he is on the hunt, he follows a few rules: "Never disturb anybody while they're eating. Never disturb anybody while they're with their families. The time to approach them is book signings, public events. ... That's part of the game."

You can always tell a fan from a collector or seller, he says, "when they want more than one. More than one means there's some kind of agenda." The younger guys, he says, have gotten very much like the paparazzi. "The invasion is more of a sport than anything else."

"When someone says 'No,' you walk away," he says. "Privacy is privacy. You don't want to cross that."

Wittnebert says this younger generation will stop at almost nothing in securing valuable celebrity scribble. "Bribery is not out of the question, especially people that work at airports, in the VIP lounges," he says. "There's always somebody that will take a few bucks." He tells a story about Paul Newman, who stopped signing autographs when people started slipping pieces of paper under the walls of bathroom stalls.

If not always glorious, the life of a professional autograph seeker can be lucrative, Wittnebert says. Much like successful photographers, he says, autograph seekers are rewarded for unique scores. "You're going to make better money by getting somebody that's very hot," he says. "You do better getting a Britney Spears than, say, a Burt Reynolds."

Things change constantly on the collectibles market, he says, where individual celebrities don't necessarily hold their value. "Burt Reynolds, during the 1970s, was the hottest actor there was," he says, but today his signature is worth far less. "You can invest in better things," he says. "You have to have a passion for the autograph to make it worth anything to you."

It is precisely a level of passion — an emotional engagement with an ephemeral token — that makes signatures valuable in the first place, Wittnebert says.

"What you have, basically, is a frozen moment in time. ... You have proof of that encounter," he says. "It's the most personal thing that each of us has, our signature. It shows who we are. It's an extension of ourselves. You're getting a personal memento from whoever it is that you particularly admire at a particular time."

Press Release: International Autograph Collector Club

German Autograph Club (AdA) establishes a homepage in English. The German Autograph Society (AdA) was founded in 1986. We were the first autograph organization in Continental Europe that organized meetings with collectors and dealers. We have designed an English version of our homepage effective April 1, 2008. The club is aware that collectors and dealers worldwide have a desire for an International organization where they can exchange ideas, educational information and find ways to protect themselves from acquiring forgeries. Additional plans of the club are to notify the membership of future autograph events and the publication of autograph educational material such as reference books and signature studies. These are the main goals of our organization. Members who publish their field of collecting will be able to exchange information with other members who have similar interests. Log onto International Autograph Collector Club and see for yourself how this club has expanded. For just 10 Euro (about $15.00) members have the ability to publish autograph related articles and much more. Those who write the most interesting article will win a monetary award. The website also offers the ability to discuss autograph related topics and exchange successful addresses in a moderated forum. A membership application will be found on the homepage. The German Autograph Society is a non profit organization and is looking forward to your support. Join today and help keep this wonderful hobby of autographs alive!

King Louis XVI Signed Document For Sale At Circa Savannah

On January 20, 1793, the National Convention condemned Louis XVI to death, his execution scheduled for the next day. Louis spent that evening saying goodbye to his wife and children. The following day dawned cold and wet. Louis arose at five. At eight o'clock a guard of 1,200 horsemen arrived to escort the former king on a two-hour carriage ride to his place of execution. In October of 1793, the Queen Marie-Antionette was brought to trial and found guilty of treason.

This rare document, signed by the king as “Bon (good), Louis,” from February 7, 1790, authorizes a pension of 3,000 livres for Pajor de Marcheval. And now Circa Savannah is offering for this document for purchase.

Long Lineups For Fans Hoping For Autographs From Juno Award Nominees

A dump of heavy, wet snow did little to dampen the enthusiasm of fans attending the annual Juno Fan Fare as part of Calgary's Juno Awards weekend.

There was a lineup at the Olympic Oval three hours before the doors opened Saturday morning as anxious fans wanted to be the first to get face-to-face and pose for pictures with their favourite artists including Hedley, Finger Eleven, illScarlet, Marianas Trench, Bedouin Soundclash, Aaron Lines, Jully Black and Faber Drive.

Inside the Oval, the pulsating beat of Finger Eleven's hit "Paralyzer" blasted through the darkness which was permeated by bright, coloured lights.

Long lines of fans, mostly teen and pre-teens, punctuated with the occasional touch of gray, waited impatiently for their opportunity.

The wait was worth it for many.

"I wanted to see Marianas Trench and Hedley," gushed Alyssa, 14. "I'm really excited. I got pictures with the lead singer of Marianas Trench.

Her friend Alex, 15, was equally happy.

"I really wanted to see Marianas Trench and we're going to get our pictures taken with Faber Drive," she added.

There was well over a thousand people roaming the vast lowel level of the Olympic Oval, most often the site of World Cup speedskating competitions. A sign warned that lineups were to be no longer than 200 people.

Not everyone was a member of the junior and senior high school crowd.

Teanna Lafond, 19 and her friend Wesley Douglas, 20 just wanted to be part of the experience.

"We're here to see Marianas Trench for the most part but we're not getting autographs because we know the guys personally," said Lafond. "We're just here to hang out and see what's going on pretty much for the day."

"I really like illScarlet and Hedley, they're good," said Douglas.

Both say Fan Fare is a good idea since it provides a free opportunity for younger fans to get to meet their heroes.

"It's good for the younger kids because a lot of the Juno stuff if targeted for an older audience," said Douglas.

"It's nice that they get to go around and see the bands and stuff like that," added Lafond.

But there's a little bit of kid in everyone, it appears. Although long past the autograph-seeking stage, the two are still fans.

"We were just actually talking about posing for pictures (with illScarlet)," she said pointing to the band behind her. "We may not. But we saw them perform Thursday night."

The Juno Awards show will be held Sunday evening. Celine Dion drew six nods, while indie darling Feist and pop star Avril Lavigne each racked up five nominations.

Vancouver crooner Michael Buble also scored five nominations, while Montreal's Arcade Fire, Finger Eleven of Burlington, Ont., and Toronto's Blue Rodeo each earned three.

Con Men Jailed For Selling Forged Sports Autographs

Two businessmen have been found guilty of forging sports stars' autographs and selling them to collectors.

Faisal Madani, 43, and Graeme Walker, 45, were convicted after a five-week trial which heard from star prosecution witnesses Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard and Ian Rush as well as evidence from Jonny Wilkinson.

Madani, of Bramhall, Cheshire, and Walker, of Connah's Quay, Flintshire, already have convictions for dishonesty and trademark offences and now face jail.

Walker was found guilty on 51 of the 53 charges against him, including dishonestly trading by selling faked signatures of Sir Alex Ferguson, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roy Keane, Gerrard, Wilkinson and others.

He was cleared of selling a fraudulent Liverpool FC Worthington Cup Final shirt purporting to be the original match shirt worn by Michael Owen and also cleared of selling a photograph with a fake signature of Owen.

Madani was convicted of 18 of the 20 charges against him including supplying many of the items to Walker.

He was cleared of selling a photograph with a fake signature of Gerrard.

Both defendants looked to the floor as the guilty verdicts were returned.

A reporting restriction around the collapse of the first trial in this case was lifted.

Andrew Thomas QC, prosecuting, informed the jury that during the first trial Madani was arrested at the court by City of London Police.

He said: "Mr Madani was arrested in relation to the alleged use of fraudulently obtained credit cards. No charges have been brought as the investigation is still ongoing."

Madani was remanded in custody until sentencing takes place at 2pm on Thursday.

Afterwards, Walker made no comment as he left the court, although his wife hurled abuse at Madani's wife.

Rita Coolidge at the Argosy Casino

Time to catch up from last week . . . this past Friday, I had the pleasure of meeting two-time Grammy winner Rita Coolidge. She was in concert at the Argosy Casino in Alton, Illinois for two weekend shows. She gladly posed for this photograph upon arrival at the venue and signed my CD and a couple of 8x10s. As an added bonus, I got to see the show for FREE thanks to another fan who had an extra ticket. The only disappointment from the show . . . she omitted one of her most popular hits, "All Time High," from the soundtrack of the James Bond movie "Octopussy."

Thanks again Kevin!
